Course overview

The aim of this course is to extend knowledge in human movement and health science into the area of health, exercise and sports psychology in order to determine the social, psychological and environmental factors that influence exercise behaviour, sport participation and human performance, as well as other health behaviours, and identify and apply individualised and appropriate best-practice behavioural strategies and theories in working with individuals in health, exercise, and sport domains. Introduction to health, exercise and sport psychology; personality; motivation; arousal and anxiety; physical activity and psychological well-being; health behaviour adherence; behaviour change theories; motivational interviewing; behaviour change techniques and mental skills.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe psychological, environmental and social factors that influence sport, exercise and physical activity participation, adherence and performance, as well as other behavioural aspects of health.
  • Discuss how participation in sport, exercise and physical activity influences psychological aspects of the individuals involved.
  • Apply health, exercise and sport psychology related knowledge and skills for professional roles related to human movement, exercise and sports science, and other health professions.
  • Apply behaviour change theories and strategies in the health, exercise and sport context.
  • Design individualized behavioural interventions in the health, exercise and sport context.
