Course overview

The aim of this course is to explore the principles of how nerves and muscles control movement and how they influence function and performance. The course builds on the foundations of structural anatomy and human physiology through the analysis of movement, applying kinesiology principals and anatomical terminology, and interpreting human performance including motor skills, reaction time, strength and physical work capacity. The aim of this course is topics covered include neuromuscular and skeletal systems, basic biomechanics of forces, muscle types and performance outputs, coordination and function, postural control and stability, and motor learning processes.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the role of the musculoskeletal system, including neurological and non-muscular components, and the effect of internal and external forces applied to these structures throughout movement.
  • Explain the theories and principles associated with the control of movement.
  • Explain the role of the reflexes, vision and kinaesthesis in the learning and control of motor skills.
  • Classify physical activities and explain limitations of motor performance and physical work capacity.
