Course overview

In this course, students will examine the complex interaction between society, the health care system and the role of the Accredited Exercise Physiologist, and gain insight into political, sociocultural, economic and individual determinants of health as well as an understanding of the current funding models within the healthcare system. Consideration is given to inequality, difference, social responsibility and social justice. Students will also be introduced to client centered practice, multi-disciplinary environments and practice models and ethical issues in health care practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Examine the Australian Health Care system and economic, societal and individual determinants of health and access to health care.
  • Apply knowledge of ethical practice, social responsibility and social justice as an Allied Health Practitioner.
  • Discuss the role of an accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) within the Australian Health Care System including, service models, legislation, regulation, rights & responsibilities and funding sources.
  • Examine the health consumers' position from different cultural and social perspectives including Aboriginal Culture and vulnerable populations.
