Course overview

To introduce students to sociological concepts and theories as well as develop essay writing skills utilised in the social sciences.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the nature of the social sciences and the contribution they make to the analysis of culture and society
  • Define some major theoretical frameworks within the social sciences
  • Explain how social sciences analyse the relationship between an individual and society
  • Explain how social sciences analyse the relationship between an individual and society
  • Identify some of the major structural elements of societies, with particular reference to Australian society
  • Use methods of argument and styles of writing appropriate for the social sciences
