Course overview
In this course, students will apply existing knowledge to understand a range of adverse responses to exercise testing and training and to learn the clinical skills to detect contraindications to commencing and adverse responses during exercise. Mechanisms of injury or dysfunction to musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory/ pulmonary, metabolic and psychological systems related to exercise testing, prescription and reasoning. Assessment and monitoring of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory/ pulmonary, metabolic and psychological systems related to exercise testing, prescription and reasoning including testing neuromuscular function, ECG testing and interpretation, point of care testing for metabolic parameters and the application of various questionnaires to assess health and function.
Course learning outcomes
- Discuss the absolute and relative contraindications to various types of exercise participation to determine the safety and suitability for a client to commence or continue exercise participation.
- Explain the range and mechanisms of adverse responses to the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory/pulmonary, metabolic and psychological systems to exercise participation.
- Evaluate the health and function of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory/pulmonary, metabolic and psychological systems for exercise participation.
- Explain the scope of practice of exercise, allied health and medical practitioners in monitoring and prescribing exercise.
