Course overview
This course will provide an understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of human growth and motor development across the lifespan with a focus on exercise, health and sport. Models of lifelong human development; developmentalist terminology; transactional models of motor development; physical, cognitive and psychosocial changes across 5 key life stages (conception to 5 years; childhood; adolescence; early and middle adulthood; late life); the influence of social determinants of health on growth and development; the influence of physical activity and exercise on lifespan, growth development and ageing.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the basic principles of human growth, development and behaviour across the lifespan in terms of physical, psychosocial and cognitive changes.
- Describe the difference between chronological and biological age and implications of these factors across the lifespan.
- Analyse and evaluate evidence based physical activity and exercise principles affecting growth, motor development, pregnancy, and ageing.
- Apply the social determinants of health that affect growth and development across the lifespan.
