Course overview
The course builds on the foundations of structural anatomy through the analysis of movement, by applying kinesiology principles and anatomical terminology. Muscle coordination and function; postural control and stability; effects of muscle imbalances on the musculoskeletal system and changes with the musculoskeletal system with aging. Students will be able to apply this knowledge through the practical assessment of strength, flexibility, anthropometric, posture and movement analysis of individuals, then interpret the findings to provide basic exercise programming advice.
Course learning outcomes
- Conduct musculoskeletal movement analysis using the principles of kinesiology.
- Describe the role of the musculoskeletal system, including neurological and non-muscular components, and the effect of internal and external forces applied to these structures throughout movement.
- Explain the effects of exercise, immobilisation, aging and injury on the musculoskeletal system of the human body, including the adaptations of the neuro-musculoskeletal system.
- Discuss the role of body proportions in sports performance and talent identification.
- Interpret results from movement analysis, including anthropometric, flexibility and posture.
- Analyse movement during prescribed exercises, identifying which muscles are active in producing and controlling a movement of a particular joint. Integrate knowledge of functional anatomy with other exercise science sub-disciplines and apply this knowledge in health , exercise, sports and workplace contexts.
