Course overview

The aim of this course is to undertake a comprehensive study of the anatomical structure and biomechanical function of the musculoskeletal system, peripheral nervous system and vascular system with an emphasis on the trunk, pelvis and lower limb. Musculoskeletal anatomy of the vertebral column, trunk, pelvis, lower limb and foot. Neuroanatomy and vascular supply. Surface anatomy; palpation; muscle testing, movement analysis and terminology. Biomechanics of the pelvis and lower limb.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the musculoskeletal and vascular structures and function of the trunk, pelvis and lower limb.
  • Describe in detail the intricate anatomical structure and function of the foot.
  • Outline the principal components of the peripheral nervous system.
  • Identify selected anatomical structures by palpation and active tests.
  • Describe the applied biomechanics of movement for musculoskeletal segments of the pelvis and lower limb.
