Course overview
The aim of this course is to promote an understanding of the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health, with a specific focus on the health of Aboriginal Australians and disadvantaged populations Core concepts of health; common measures of health (morbidity, birth/death rates, burden of disease etc.); risk factors, social, cultural and environmental determinants affecting health across state, national, international populations with special reference to marginalised or disadvantaged groups such as Aboriginal Australians; current and new challenges to health and health care systems; health promotion: principles and interventions.
Course learning outcomes
- Discuss burden of disease in the national and international context
- Compare and contrast health status (risk, prevalence and outcomes) across local, national and international populations as a result of social, cultural and environmental factors.
- Identify and describe the basis for differences in health status with particular emphasis on Aboriginal Australians and disadvantaged populations
- Identify and describe current and future challenges to health and health care systems
- Demonstrate developing foundation skills in, academic writing, referencing, sourcing information, and creating, manipulating and interpreting data and graphs.
