Course overview
In this course, students will develop skills in the use of computer aided design and virtual modelling as a tool for visualising and communicating design intent of objects. Students will learn to create solid models of a simple product that will be used to create engineering drawings to AS1100 to specify shape, size, and materials; plus create photo-quality images. The students will be introduced to techniques for solid modelling. Engineering drawing and dimensioning to AS1100: drawing sheet layout; line types and text size; view placement; reference dimensions; section views and SolidWorks basics (sketch, extrude and cut) and advanced modelling (mirror, pattern, loft, sweep), creating assemblies, drawings, bills of materials and photo rendering.
Course learning outcomes
- Recognize and use basic Euclidean geometric construction techniques to construct simple shapes and to solve simple geometric problems.
- Construct and modify basic solid geometry in the CAD environment using solid-modelling techniques.
- Communicate design intent by using SolidWorks to create part and assembly drawings of an item to AS1100 that defines size, shape, materials, Build simple assemblies and sub-assemblies of parts using the assembly creation tools.
- Compose engineering drawings, including part and assembly drawings, including orthogonal view, sections, auxiliary views, dimensions, technical specifications and annotations that adhere to AS1100.
- Execute a range of product visualisations including photo realistic renderings, technical illustrations for evaluation, presentation and communication.
