Course overview

This course includes technological changes shaping the development of modern design, from the Industrial Revolution up to Post-Modernism. Students will become familiar with key design movements and theories, significant designers, exemplary works of design, and important technological and social changes affecting both every-day life since the mid-nineteenth century and the world of design.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the dynamic historical relationship between social, cultural and technological changes and design practice from 19th through to the early 21st century
  • Recognise key movements, theories, designers and exemplary works of design in the period
  • Describe design's significant cultural role as a shaper of behaviour and social and cultural norms
  • Articulate design's potential role in developing more sustainable objects, images and systems
  • Identify and use basic research strategies and skills in academic discourse
