Course overview
This course will introduce students to the basics of drawing, for the representation, development and communication of design concepts and form solutions with an emphasis on hand sketching of perspective drawing. The students will develop knowledge and skills of orthogonal and perspective drawing to develop, evaluate and communicate three dimensional products and objects. There will be an introduction to basic colour application and rendering skills to simulate materials, communicate functional properties and to increase the perception of depth and volume. In addition they will learn to use drawing as a tool for conceptual analysis and thinking and the use of text and images to communicate design ideas to third parties. Students will develop their skills by producing a portfolio of drawings demonstrating a range of skills and representation techniques.
Course learning outcomes
- Recognise the range of drawing and representation techniques, methods and materials typically used by designers.
- Apply the principles of perspective construction to create drawings describing form, shape, texture and structure.
- Employ drawings to develop, evaluate and communicate three dimensional form ideas.
- Apply rendering techniques to represent and communicate materials and shade and shadow in drawings.
- Execute simple layouts of text and images to communicate simple design ideas.
