Course overview

This course aims to introduce students to the animation theory and practice required to produce a range of 3D character performances. Students will develop skills in planning 3D modelling for rigging and animation, and think of lighting, texturing, and rendering for narrative purposes, applying concepts, techniques and processes in industry standard software, including Maya and Unreal Engine. Students will learn fundamental principles of animation specific to character design and performance, including walk and run cycles, pose-to-pose and straight-ahead animation, facial animation, and motion capture. The assessment tasks will provide students with the opportunity to combine these skills and techniques to develop a short story.
