Course overview
The aim of this course is to further develop theoretical and practical skills in Geospatial Science while focusing on acquisition and analysis of spatial data. This course is designed for learners to appraise primary and secondary spatial data types and collection methods to subsequently apply appropriate analysis and presentation techniques to natural and built environmental projects. Learner will gain skills in acquiring and building spatial data in the field and office environments, and then the analysis and presentation of various spatial data GIS software packages. Ultimately, this course aims to develop in learners the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems which aligns with key demands in scientific careers, equipping graduates to address real-world challenges effectively and to excel in various scientific sectors.
Course learning outcomes
- Synthesise the concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the major functionality contained in the standard GIS software
- Adapt a geographic approach to analyse a spatial problem
- Recognise various GIS data formats and restructure them for adapting in a GIS software Analysis
- Manipulate geoprocessing tools to analyse a spatial problem
- Combine the knowledge and skills gained to develop and present a GIS research project in the context of an engineering-related case study
