Course overview
To provide a comprehensive understanding of global, national and local level socio-ecological conflicts and their resolution. To equip students with theoretical aspects of conflict resolution as well as with practical skills and techniques for non-adversarial conflict resolution. The course also aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in designing and implementing complex community consultation projects.
Course learning outcomes
- Compare and contrast the complex interactions between social, environmental and economic factors relevant to the generation conflict.
- Compile information about the range of stakeholders and interested parties in any natural resource conflict, and demonstrate how their viewpoints are based on divergent discourses and values.
- Prioritise and apply the principles of consultation and conflict resolution to solve issues by appropriately selecting from and planning a range of techniques.
- Demonstrate leadership and operational skills in facilitation, interviewing, various participatory consultation methodologies and running public engagement sessions.
- Appraise implications of an international, cross-cultural context in environmental consultation and adapt engagement strategies based on associated challenges.
