Provide students with a conceptual framework for planning and policy options to gain conservation and educational benefits from ecotourism while minimizing negative impacts; and
As lifelong travellers, students will be able to make responsible decisions about sustainability and impact through choice of certified and managed eco-travel products.
Course learning outcomes
- describe the historical context for defining the evolution of ecotourism.
- able to systematically critique any ecotourism proposal for sustainability and benefits based on a standard set of criteria and questions.
- recognise the socio-cultural, environmental and economic tradeoffs associated with ecotourism, and how product configuration and management can shift these impacts.
- apply a tool kit of planning concepts and policy options that move the international industry toward more sustainable forms of tourism
- recognise the nature of private sector and community-based ecotourism experiences representing a variety of South Australian settings
