Course overview
Tourism has become one of the largest industries in the world in terms of employment and international trade. On the other hand, public concerns have been growing for the environmental, ecological, and social impacts of tourism, such as the overuse of natural resources, carbon emissions, neoliberalism-driven tourism industry. This course investigates tourism impacts on natural, social, and economic environments at tourism destinations. The course considers the recreational, educational, and economic aspects of tourism associated with protected areas, agricultural landscapes, green open spaces, and cultural assets.
Course learning outcomes
- Develop an understanding of social disputation over the use of natural resources for tourism purposes
- Develop and discuss appropriate policy approaches to overcoming tourism-induced environmental problems and to promoting sustainable tourism
- Understand the characteristics of nature-based tourism from consumer and producer perspectives
- Convey ideas, using the knowledge gained through class participation, seminar presentation and essay writing
- Develop a sound understanding of the concept of sustainable tourism in using natural resources
