Course overview

The aim of this course is to highlight how various forms of communication shape debates, behaviour and change around issues associated with climate change. The course examines climate science communication, climate anxiety, as well as climate change denial narratives to highlight the differing strategies employed by the competing groups that populate this contested terrain. Following this foundation, students learn how to develop practical communication strategies that focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Such strategies are playing an increasingly important role in mitigating against the harmful effects of climate change, while supporting protective and preventive action.

Course learning outcomes

  • Build practical experience of applying communication tools and methods to the climate change issue
  • Develop and apply critical thinking skills to communication and climate change problems
  • Develop skills in communication, collaborative enquiry and problem solving
  • Foster an awareness of ethical, social, and cultural issues within a global context and their importance in the exercise of professional skills and responsibilities
  • Build an in-depth knowledge of climate change communication
