Course overview

In order to understand current global climate change, the course examines the impacts on both society and the physical environment and guides students through contemporary and future approaches to develop responses to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the interconnectedness between human activities, greenhouse gas concentrations, and the physical processes driving climate variation and change
  • Analyse the social, economic, and environmental impacts of climate change on different regions and communities - particularly vulnerable populations of humans and biota
  • Evaluate existing, and proposed mitigation strategies at local, national, and global scales, considering their effectiveness, feasibility and ethical implications using a lens of sustainability principles
  • Evaluate existing, and proposed adaptation strategies at local, national, and global scales, considering their effectiveness, feasibility, and ethical implications
  • Assess the effectiveness of different communication approaches in developing, and implementing, appropriate policy responses which account for the needs of diverse stakeholders
