Course overview
The purpose of this course is to consolidate student knowledge on projected climate change impacts and build an in-depth understanding of inclusive, respectful design strategies that can be developed and applied to help adapt to these impacts. The course has a strong focus on concepts of resilience and resilient design principles. Students will consider climate change mitigation and (mal)adaptation, to help guide synergistic solutions contributing to a sustainable future. Students will apply engineering design principles to a range of real-world sectors and settings (such as food systems, housing and built infrastructure and natural ecosystems), in order to develop climate-resilient pathways.
- Climate & Resilience
- Resilient Design Approaches
- Socioeconomic Factors
Course learning outcomes
- Identify and synthesise information required to describe the nature, extent, and uncertainty of projected climate change under different scenarios, in terms of changes to average conditions, extreme events and natural disasters, and how these changes may affect human and non-human systems
- Describe what is meant by ‘resilience’ in relation to different human and natural systems, including different disciplinary perspectives / definitions of resilience (Ecology, Disaster Risk, Social Sciences, Infrastructure) and apply these definitions in the context of climate change
- Apply the key principles of resilient design to evaluate and critique existing or proposed responses to climate change, in order to identify maladaptive approaches and make synergistic alternative design recommendations
- Formulate creative design solutions to improve the resilience of a range of human and natural systems that are vulnerable to future climate change, such as food supply, housing, coastal environments and infrastructure, and natural ecosystems
- Communicate topics relating to exposure, vulnerability and resilience in a way that embraces diversity, including inclusive language and clear respect for the knowledge and perspectives of First Nations peoples, and the importance of inclusivity and social justice in adapting to climate change
