Course overview
This course provides an introductory overview to the topic of sustainability, and will help students develop the engineering competencies required to address the uncertain, complex and ambiguous nature of sustainability challenges.

Course learning outcomes
- Describe key characteristics of system thinking and apply system thinking methods to the diagnosis of environmental and sustainable development challenges
- Describe and apply causal models to environmental accidents, and identify approaches that engineers can take to mitigate accidents and enhance the environmental safety of engineered systems
- Summarise different types of environmental pollution, including physical, chemical, biological, acoustic and radiation, and identify engineering solutions to mitigate pollution
- Articulate different approaches to community engagement, and the value of participation and respecting different cultural, value and knowledge systems in developing sustainable solutions
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key steps in assessing the environmental impacts for a large engineering development
- Articulate and explain the core competencies that engineers need to address the uncertain, ambiguous and complex nature of achieving sustainable solutions
