Course overview

This course introduces you to the fundamental fluid and particle mechanics and its applications in process engineering. This course will first focus on solving single-phase fluid flow problems and design of pipeline and equipment for fluid transport. Then the multi-phase fluid flow problems where fluid (liquid or gas) flowing in the presence of particulate solids will be discussed. Key topics covered include flow in pipes, turbomachinery, flow measurements, particulate systems and mechanics of particles in a fluid; This course aligns with the program’s intent to demonstrate a chemical engineering body of knowledge and apply this knowledge along with critical thinking, creativity, and innovation for industrial and real-life complex problems.

  • Pipe Flow And Fluid Transport
  • Particulate Systems And Particle Machanics
  • Flow Through Porous Media

Course learning outcomes

  • Calculate the pressure loss across different piping systems
  • Estimate the size of pumps for fluid transport and understand the industrial practices for flow measurement
  • Characterise and describe and measure particle size distributions
  • Predict the velocity of particles moving in a fluid as a function of particle characteristics (size, shape, deformability and concentrations) and fluid properties
  • Perform basic design calculations and analyses of typical fluid-particle operations and related industrial equipment, such as flow through porous media
