Course overview

This course introduces engineering thermodynamics, including energy and entropy balance for closed and open systems, applications of thermodynamic principles in various cycles, and analysis of thermal energy conversion in a range of thermo-mechanical cycles required in the transition to Net Zero systems for energy production, transportation and industrial processes.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain engineering thermodynamic principles and their importance in thermal systems
  • Explain basic gas laws and phase change processes
  • Discuss the different forms of energy, its transfer and the laws that control this transfer
  • Discuss the engineering thermodynamic cycles and their role and application in the transition to Net Zero
