Course overview

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding and practical application of computer-aided design drawing, computer-aided modelling, simulation and design optimisation with finite element analysis (FEA) techniques and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on mechanical systems and their integration in evaluation of modern engineering systems through industry-focused case studies. This course is designed to have a very practical, hands-on approach. Students are expected to enhance their CAD drawing, CAD model skills, FEA/CFD skills and the applications in simple engineering applications. The course is suitable for Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students in their honour's year.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate the fundamental and intermediate skills of a CAD/CAE software package
  • Prepare drawings and documentation suitable for manufacture
  • Use a CAD/CAE software for design modelling, analysis and optimisation, then redesign a mechanical system
  • Apply finite element (FEA) modelling and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and analysis in the design of mechanical systems
  • Evaluate the quality of the FEA/CFD analysis solution and refine models to achieve convergence and higher accuracy, validate the results with a working system
  • Do a complete set of analyses of a complex industrial grade product, and prepare the Engineering documentation
