Course overview
This course introduces students to the humanitarian/development continuum, and the roles engineers play in supporting these fields. This including a general understanding of critical topics such as water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), logistics and supply chain management for disaster relief, disaster risk reduction, monitoring and evaluation. Students will learn about the UN and allied organisations, will develop skills in response planning and become familiar with humanitarian standards such as the sphere handbook. This course aligns with the program's intent to provide a comprehensive understanding of the engineer's role toward humanity and society.

Course learning outcomes
- Be familiar with the role of UN and partner organisations across the humanitarian/development spectrum
- Demonstrated ability to apply technical and non-technical response planning to humanitarian crisis scenarios
- Appropriate application of the Sphere standards to humanitarian response scenarios
- Develop Disaster Risk Reduction plans to response scenarios
- Develop a Monitor and Evaluation plan to response scenarios
