Course overview

The aim of this course is to enable students to apply the principles of heat transfer and fluid mechanics in practical applications and in the design of thermal systems. Dimensional analysis and model study; Multidimensional steady state and transient heat conduction; natural and forced convection; radiation; boiling and condensation; heat exchangers. Introduction to compressible flow.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply the principles of dimensional analysis to experimental investigations including model study.
  • Critically evaluate various modes of heat transmission using empirical, numerical and analytical techniques.
  • Identify and apply appropriate methods to design, select and evaluate heat exchangers.
  • Analyse compressible fluid flow systems.
