Course overview
In this course, students will develop fundamental practical knowledge and hands-on skills in mechanical engineering design and practice, and introduction to real world industry contexts. Practical approaches to mechanical engineering design; formulating design specifications; measurement and instrumentation; mechanisms, materials and their selections; engineering drawings, tolerance and fits; fastening and joining; analysis of strength and stiffness; CAM and manufacturing; mechatronic concepts for mechanical device control; design selection, evaluation and testing of prototypes; risk assessment and documentation; and the design process in industry.
Course learning outcomes
- Analyse engineering design problems, perform mind-mapping, conceptualise solutions and evaluate alternatives. (PO 4, 5, 6) (EA 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.6)
- Analyse and produce preliminary and detailed designs. (PO 4, 5, 6) (EA 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.6)
- Produce, measure, analyse and assemble the designed components using relevant practical tools and software, and make performance-based revisions. (PO 4, 5, 6) (EA 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.6)
- Produce a formal design report, including GANTT Charts, cost details, risk assessment and SOP [standard operating procedure]. (PO 7) (EA 3.2)
- Examine design approaches and practices used in industry by mechanical engineers and reflect on your experience of working in a team to produce a mechanical design solution. (PO 7) (EA 3.2)
