Course overview

This course aims to familiarise the students with the practical aspects of professional mechanical engineering. Through presentations, hands-on activities, a design and construction project, and professional analysis, students will acquire and apply a diverse set of practical skills, including communication skills using engineering reports and graphical communication to design, fabricate, and operate small mechanisms. After completing this course, students will acquire basic knowledge of design principles for mechanical systems and mechanical design practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse engineering design problems, perform mind-mapping, conceptualise solutions and evaluate alternatives
  • Analyse and produce preliminary and detailed designs
  • Produce, measure, analyse and assemble the designed components using relevant practical tools and software, and make performance-based revisions
  • Understand and analyse various mechanical mechanisms commonly used in engineering design
  • Produce a formal design report, including GANTT Charts, cost details, risk assessment and SOP (Standard Operating Procedure)
  • Examine design approaches, reflect on experiences of working in a team to produce a mechanical design solution, and communicate effectively
