Course overview
This capstone applied design course expands knowledge base and depth in the fundamental area of producing and controlling motion, to apply, design, automate, integrate and validate coherent technical solutions. The sequence of lectures will cover the following: Introduction of industrial actuation and automation; Hydraulic drives and circuits; Pneumatic drives and circuits; Electrical drives; Relay automation; PLC automation; Piezo-electric drives; Servo-actuators and automation.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental concepts underpinning Hydraulic, Pneumatic, Electric and Piezo-Electric actuation, Relay and PLC automation and their integration (PO 1, 4)(EA 1.2, 1.3; 2.1, 2.2)
- Critically assess the practical context of industrial actuation and automation. (PO 1, 2) (EA 1.3, 1.4)
- Select the most appropriate automation and actuation strategy based on technical, economical and service factors (PO 3, 8) (EA 1.5, 1.6, 3.1, 3.6)
- Apply theoretical and practical knowledge to design a real-life kinematic chain (a direct or servo actuation system) (PO 4, 7, 8) (EA 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 3.6)
