Course overview

This course will equip students with advanced knowledge in programmable logic controller (PLC) technology to solve problems related to mechatronic systems. Small-group projects and practicals will be used to provide important hands-on experience to solve mechatronic engineering problems. Students will also gain a modern and practical understanding on remote control via human-machine interface (HMI) based on the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology. Student-centred learning method is used to encourage students to learn actively whenever and wherever you choose to.

Course learning outcomes

  • Develop basic programming skills with PLCs
  • Demonstrate an understanding of data types, CPU memory, I/O
  • Demonstrate the ability to program automation processes using PLCs
  • Demonstrate the ability to control simple devices such as motors and cylinders using PLCs
  • Explan the architecture of Micro-controller systems
  • Design a simple real-time Micro-controller system
