Course overview
This course provides students with foundational and practical knowledge of how biomedical sensors and instruments operate within modern health technologies. Students will explore the principles, capabilities and limitations of commonly used biomedical sensors, and learn to model and analyse both instrument behaviour and physiological systems using electrical equivalents. Through hands-on activities, they will build and use biomedical measurements to record and interpret physiological signals. The course also develops students’ ability to evaluate sensor specifications, select appropriate instrumentation for specific diagnostic purposes, and assess key design and safety requirements for biomedical devices.
- General concepts and sensors
- Bioelectric Sensing
- Blood pressure and flow, Ultrasound, Respiratory function
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the operating principles of common biomedical sensors and identify measurement constraints.
- Model and analyse the behaviour of biomedical instruments and organ systems using electrical equivalents.
- Utilise and build biomedical instruments to perform measurements.
- Evaluate sensor specifications and identify suitable biomedical instruments for specific diagnostic tests.
- Assess instrument design requirements, including safety aspects.
