Course overview

This course will provide an extension of knowledge in electronic measurement and equipment calibration, data capture, plane surveying calculations and information presentation. This course will extend knowledge of GNSS data capture and processing techniques for control and topographical surveys. Land surveying data gathering skills, error detection, analysis and elimination. Electronic surveying instrumentation. Electronic distance measurement theory, equipment use and calibration. Trigonometrical levelling. ICSM levelling guidelines. Applications of electronic field-to-finish systems. Volume determination. Advanced traverse computations and adjustment techniques. GNSS surveying techniques and data processing. Horizontal, vertical and transition curves for road engineering combined with geometrical design criteria for roads.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply error theory and analyse error propagation effects on surveying measurements.
  • Explain the geometrical design principles for roads and undertake the computations and set out of associated road features.
  • Articulate and clarify the difference between ground distances and projection distances with respect to survey data.
  • Consolidate and extend survey data computations and analysis.
