Course overview
Good engineering solutions require consideration of systems thinking, including elements such as stakeholder requirements, life cycle management, and design documentation. Students will undertake a group design project, planning and executing a systems engineering approach to develop, analyse, and refine system designs. They will also learn to verify and validate these designs against system requirements and problem statements. The course further emphasises the importance of professional and ethical conduct, effective information management, the impact of organisational culture on innovation. It encourages continual professional development and improves communication and teamwork skills.
- Project and Problem Definition
- Concept Design and Selection
- Integrated Engineering Practice
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the importance of systems thinking, problem context, the systems engineering lifecycle and key systems engineering activity areas including recognising the need to define the problem to be solved as the first step in engineering design
- Plan and execute a systems engineering approach to a group design project including: analyse a given problem and develop an appropriate problem specification; define, compare and select from alternative system designs; and develop, refine and describe the selected system design
- Identify and explain how the design can be verified against system requirements and validated against the problem statement
- Apply principles of safety and sustainability in systems engineering to ensure designs are both safe for users and sustainable over their lifecycle
- Explain the non-technical aspects of design projects, including creativity and innovation, sustainability, and safety and consider how organisational culture interacts with these aspects
- Demonstrate and model a proactive demeanour, effective and inclusive teamwork, professional and ethical conduct, and proficient management and use of information in an engineering context, as well as showcasing advanced written, oral, and graphical and reflective communication skills suitable for complex academic and professional engineering contexts
