Course overview
This course covers theories of vibration systems, vibration control mechanisms and devices, and fundamentals of vibration modelling and analysis to analyse different techniques and their applications in engineering system design and maintenance. It also introduces the fundamental concepts of acoustics and impacts of noise, including methods for assessment, control, and mitigation. The use of spectral analysis via the Fast Fourier Transform is introduced to obtain the frequency response characteristics of acoustic and vibration systems.
Course learning outcomes
- Understand the fundamentals of acoustics and apply to the assessment of occupational and environmental noise problems
- Discuss the principles of vibrations, including concepts of modes and natural frequencies, and the influence of mass, stiffness and damping on the motion of vibratory systems
- Design forced vibratory systems, vibration isolation systems, and vibration absorbers
- Understand the fundamentals of signal processing/spectral analysis and the controlling parameters of the Fast Fourier Transform
- Appreciate the differences between Aboriginal musical instruments and Western and Eastern instruments
