Course overview
Mathematical models are used to predict and optimise the performance and behaviour of engineering systems. This second modelling course is an introduction to the formulation and solution of engineering problems involving data, statistics, simulations and numerical approximations. The course shows how to model relationships between variables in face of uncertainty and how to apply numerical methods to solve otherwise intractable problems. Computational tools for statistical and numerical modelling are introduced.

Course learning outcomes
- Formulate and solve engineering problems involving data, statistics, simulations and numerical approximations
- Apply concepts of probability and statistics to model relationships between variables in face of uncertainty
- Derive, analyse and apply numerical methods to obtain approximate solutions to otherwise intractable problems
- Compute and visualise results using computer software
- Present results of calculations in a clear and logical manner and interpret the results in context
