Course overview

This course will provide students with an introduction to the relationship between microstructure, properties and processing of engineering materials. The course will also introduce students to appropriate selection of materials for engineering applications. The course will introduce students to the properties of engineering materials, and provide them with an understanding of how these properties are measured. Mechanical, electrical, magnetic, physical and surface properties will be examined. The primary failure modes of engineering materials, corrosion, fatigue and wear will be studied. The structure of materials will be studied at the atomic scale, the micro scale and the macro scale. The four main classes of materials will be included in the course: ceramics, polymers, metals, and composites.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the relationship between microstructure, processing and material properties for a broad range of engineering materials. (PLO 1) (EA 1.1, 1.5) (GQ 1)
  • Analyse and interpret basic engineering data, standard tests and measurements. (PLO 1) (EA 2.1, 2.2) (GQ 1, 3)
  • Utilise material properties in basic problem solving in the context of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. (PLO 3, 4) (EA 1.1, 1.5, 2.1, 3.1) (GQ 3, 5)
  • Make appropriate materials selection in engineering design. (PLO 3, 4) (EA 2.1, 2.2, 3.1) (GQ 3, 5)
