Course overview

This course provides an overview of power electronics and electric drive systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the history, recent/future developments and current/future applications of power electronics
  • Explain the properties, performance, modelling and analysis of common power devices including diodes, thyristors and transistors (BJT, IGBT and MOSFET) including their thermal design
  • Describe the operation and analyse the performance of at least one example of each of the four basic power electronic converters (AC-DC, AC-AC, DC-DC and DC-AC). Explain concepts of hard/soft switching, voltage/current source converters, continuous/discontinuous operation
  • Describe the operation of the key components of electric motor drives
  • Develop models and simulate the operation of a PV maximum point tracker/inverter and also for a permanent magnet electric vehicle drive
