Course overview

To provide students with advanced knowledge in mathematical modelling of power systems and use of various computational techniques and tools in evaluating steady state and dynamic performances of the systems.

Course learning outcomes

  • Calculate both symmetrical and asymmetrical fault currents in simple power systems
  • Describe the fundamentals of electromechanical relays and digital protective relaying
  • Explain the process of choosing suitable current transformers, voltage transformers and circuit breakers etc. for fulfilling power system protection
  • Describe the application of the IEC61850 communication protocol for power system protection
  • Determine the protection settings when designing a protection scheme for a simple power system network and components including bus bars and feeder protection, transformer protection, stator and rotor protection
  • Describe the protection of microgrids
  • Explain the required protection of a renewable integrated system
