Course overview
Special Topics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as determined by the Head of School. This course may be offered from time to time and will be taught by visiting academics.
Course learning outcomes
- Calculate both symmetrical and un-symmetrical fault currents in power systems
- Understand the fundamentals of electromechanical relays and digital protective relaying
- Calculate the magnitude and angle of voltage and current for digital relaying
- Understand the process of choosing suitable current transformers, voltage transformers and circuit breakers etc. for fulfilling power system protection
- Understand and apply key design principles of overcurrent protection and its coordination
- Understand and apply key design principles of directional overcurrent protection
- Understand and apply key design principles of differential protection
- Understand and apply key design principles of distance protection
- Understand the application of the IEC61850 communication protocol for power system protection
