Course overview

This course studies feedback control principles and practical control of dynamical systems. The course topics include PID control, dynamical systems modelling, small-signal stability and linearisation, time- and frequency-domain response and analysis, state-space modelling and control system design. An integrated part of the course is hands-on practicals to model, design and implement a real-time servo motion control of a bench-top experiment set.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply the basic control systems engineering principles of modelling, analysis and design to simple control systems
  • Explain the concepts of transient and frequency response analysis, stability, state-space modelling, servo control and regulator problems
  • Gain hands-on experience in performing motion simulation, motion control and controller deployment on a laboratory scale control system
