Course overview

This course aims to empower students with a comprehensive understanding of design principles, methodologies, and practices essential for tackling real-world challenges. Students will develop the ability to conceptualise, analyse, and implement solutions to a given problem, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and proficiency in design tools and techniques. The student will be competent in printed circuit board layout, through-hold soldering and use of electronic test equipment. Working on design projects will enhance interpersonal and communication skills and prepare them as an effective member of an engineering design team.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply fundamental principles to design electrical and electronic systems
  • Utilise industry-standard design tools and software effectively
  • Produce an electronic PCB prototype, test and troubleshoot the completed board using electronic test equipment and follow appropriate safety measures
  • Evaluate the performance of a prototype using appropriate metrics
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills for design challenges
  • Enhance communication, collaboration and contribute effectively as a responsible member of an engineering design team
