Course overview
To equip students with the skills required to quantify flood risk for design purposes and effectively manage flood events in diverse rural and urban environments. The aim is to prepare students for professional practice. Therefore, students will develop a working knowledge of the national guidelines for flood estimation, Australian Rainfall and Runoff and hands-on experience in using industry-standard software applications for design flood estimation and flood management. The course is offered in a hybrid of project-based and problem-based approaches using design projects from real world case studies
- Peak Flow Estimation
- Flood Hydrograph Estimation
- Urban Stormwater Management
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts in flood hydrology, flood process, the principles of flood frequency analysis, design rainfall estimation, event-based rainfall-runoff modelling, and the key design considerations of urban stormwater systems.
- Apply knowledge and principles of peak flow estimation by using at-site and regional flood frequency analyses to quantify flood magnitudes
- Apply knowledge and principles of design flood estimation to use design storm estimation, an event-based rainfall-runoff model, including the principles of model development, calibration, and evaluation approaches to investigate the impact of changes (climate and/or land-use) on the design flood hydrograph
- Critically analyse, independently identify and apply the most appropriate flood estimation techniques to generate innovative solutions to complex engineering problems in flood estimation and management of a catchment of interest
- Apply the principles of urban stormwater management to design and assess an urban stormwater management system
