Course overview
This course will equip students with the necessary skills to conduct design flood estimation using both rainfall-based and runoff-based techniques, following the guidelines outlined in the Australian Rainfall Runoff (ARR). Flood routing and rainfall-runoff modelling will be employed for flood forecasting. Flood frequency analyses of historical data will be performed to quantify flood probability & magnitude and confidence limits. Regional flood studies will be performed for ungauged catchment predictions. The principles of designing conventional storm drainage systems for urban landscapes for managing urban flooding will be covered.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the key concepts in flood hydrology, and understand the principles of flood routing, rainfall-runoff modelling, flood frequency analyses and the key design considerations of urban stormwater systems. Differentiate strengths and weaknesses of design flood estimation by rainfall-based and runoff-based techniques
- Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of the principles of model development, calibration, and evaluation approaches in the context of RORB rainfall-runoff modelling to investigate the impact of land use changes
- Demonstrate the ability to apply basic principles of flood frequency analyses to quantify flood magnitudes and their confidence limits at a given AEP by performing calculation-based analyses and using the FLIKE software tool
- Cultivate the ability to critically analyse, independently identify and apply the most appropriate flood estimation techniques to generate innovative solutions to complex engineering problems in flood estimation and management of a catchment of interest
- Collaborate with peers to perform flood studies of a catchment and design an urban stormwater drainage system for a new development using the DRAINS software tool. Demonstrate leadership skills by taking initiative and coordinating group activities effectively during project-based learning tasks
- Effectively communicate design considerations, rainfall-runoff modelling process and confidence in the design flood estimations and flood management strategies to diverse audiences, both orally and in writing
