Course overview

The objective of this course is to make students aware of the concepts used in 1) computer aided analysis of structures and 2) dynamic analysis of structures. Computer aided analysis topics include: basic theory and formulation of matrix method of analysis based on stiffness approach; and application of these theories to linear analysis of 2D/3D trusses, frames and grillage. Students will use commercial software as well as develop their own computer program to analyse different structures. Dynamic analysis the topics include: basic theories of free and forced vibration of structures idealised as single and multiple degree-of-freedom problems with and without consideration of damping; application of these theories to dynamic analysis of different structures; and response spectra.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the fundamental concepts and theoretical (mathematical) formulations of Matrix Method for analyses of skeletal structures such as beams, 2D plane and 3D space trusses, 2D plane and 3D space frames, and grillage frames under static loads; Also, introduction to structural dynamics to analyse these structures under dynamic loads
  • Apply these principles in solving structural problems manually (hand calculations) as well as using computer programs
  • Develop own computer programs for analysing structures of different shapes, sizes, and complexities
  • Employ commercially available computer software used in Australian industry for analysing different types of skeletal structures
  • Demonstrate ability in problem identification, relevant theoretical formulations, and solving structural analysis problems
  • Demonstrate ability to manage tasks related to home work-assignments within the allocated time to meet submission deadlines
  • Demonstrate ability to work professionally with other student members for group projects on 1) development and validation/checking of a generalised computer program, 2) analysis of structures using commercially available software
  • Apply life-long learning skills
