Course overview
The aim of this course is to develop in-depth understanding of advanced structural principles of stability, strength and serviceability in structural design, and: develop and extend students' analysis and design skills in hot-rolled steel and cold-formed steel structures; familiarise students with computer packages commonly used in steel structural design; explore the latest research outcomes in steel structures. This includes: Advanced steel material properties: fracture and crack development, fatigue failure; Steel members subjected to complex loadings; Design of steel plate beams and lattice columns: flexural buckling, lateral buckling, supporter design; Plate theory: local buckling, post-buckling, collapse, effective width; Behaviour of thin-walled open sections: bending, shear, torsion, warping, bimoment, lateral, torsional, flexural and torsional buckling; Design of thin-walled sections: beams, columns and frames; Use of design codes of practice.
Course learning outcomes
- Exhibit extended and consolidated advanced structural knowledge of fracture, fatigue, stability, strength and serviceability in hot-rolled steel design and cold-formed steel design. (PO 1), (EA 1.3)
- Demonstrate technical competence in the following specific areas of steel structural analysis and design: Analysis of structural elements resulting from the application of the design loads; Design of bars, beams and columns subjected to complex loadings in hot-rolled steel and cold-formed steel for strength, stability and serviceability; Consideration of the stability of a complete structure under ultimate loads (PO 1,4,5), (EA 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.3)
- Demonstrate a command of Australian Standards AS 4100 and AS 4600 (PO 1,4,5,6), (EA 1.3, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3)
- Work in a team to demonstrate a high level of competence in professional design and skills for effective communication to a diverse audience (PO 4,5, 7,8), (EA 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2, 3.5, 3.6)
- Apply latest technology and research outcomes to analysis and design of complex structures not covered by standard codes of practice (PO 2,4,5,6), (EA 1.4, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.3, 3.4)
