This course will enable students to design and analyse steel and timber structures. Review of Limit state design and load evaluation. The influence of functional, environmental, aesthetic and economic factors on structural design. Analysis and design of steel and timber beams, tension and compression members. The design and detailing of connections for steel and timber structures. Use of design codes of practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Consolidate and extend their knowledge of structural analysis and limit states design (PO1).
  • Design simple and intermediate structures in steel and timber (PO4).
  • Design and integrate first principles theoretical knowledge with practical design and analysis techniques, including the use of computer analysis programs (PO4, 5).
  • Design structures in steel and timber to comply with Australian Standards (PO1, 4).
  • Communicate design processes and outcomes in a manner acceptable to the engineering profession, through calculations and drawings (PO7).
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a professional team (PO8).
