Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles applicable to rural road planning, geometric design, traffic management, and pavement engineering. Through theoretical instruction and practical exercises, students will develop proficiency in designing and managing rural road infrastructure while integrating sustainable practices, including the use of recycled materials, and employing mechanistic design principles for various pavement types.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify the objectives and principles of geometric road design and the relationships between horizontal and vertical alignment geometry for driver safety and comfort
  • Apply current guidelines in the design of road geometric elements using relevant software
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the functional classification of roads and traffic management, including impact assessment
  • Analyse the laboratory and field testing data of pavement materials and apply to pavement design
  • Evaluate the current guidelines in design of different types of pavements and road surfacing, and design pavement based on mechanistic design principles
  • Apply the understanding of pavement assessment management and sustainable pavement technologies (reusing and recycling materials for pavement)
