Course overview

This course will introduce students to the scope and implications of societal multilingualism, individual student bilingual and plurilingual capabilities and needs, the cognitive, spoken and written practices of translanguaging, and how to maximise their affordances for all students in education.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify and differentiate among the needs of students in EALD, TESOL, EMI and Languages education contexts
  • Offer critical comparison of the nature and dynamics of multilingualism at the societal or system level, plurilingualism at the individual level, and how these articulate with EALD, TESOL, EMI and Languages education
  • Understand the cognitive and linguistic processes of translanguaging and related translation or transknowledging practices, and apply and demonstrate at least two of these in collaborative peer-teaching practice
  • Critically appraise a case study that relates to one of EALD, TESOL, EMI or Languages education
