Course overview

To explore why Catholic Schools exist today, key research and beliefs about learners and teachers in Catholic Schools as well as pedagogies and professional practices that enhance the aims of Catholic Education. Participants will reflect on how Catholic theology contributes to the educator’s beliefs about children, childhood and adolescence, to their personal and professional identity and to choices about educational principles, methods and approaches best aligned to enhancing the mission of contemporary Catholic Schools.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify and critically discuss how Catholic anthropology and Catholic Social Teaching Principles directly shape educational practices in Catholic Schools
  • Critically reflect on personal and professional teacher identity in the light of Catholic beliefs and values
  • Examine and critique approaches to teaching and learning in Catholic School classrooms to enhance contemporary understandings of identity and mission of Catholic Schools
  • Research, create, implement and evaluate a range of transformative practices appropriate for enhancing a contemporary Catholic School’s identity and mission
