Course overview

To critically analyse dominant discourses that shape contemporary approaches to managing learning environments, student behaviour, engagement, wellbeing, and character. From a grounding in Islamic Pedagogy, students experiment with learning environment redesign in practice. To develop students' professional approaches to the management of learning environments, establishing relationships between effective management approaches and the teaching and learning process for whole student development within an Islamic worldview. To examine effective models, approaches and strategies that promote the refinement of character, develop productive learner behaviours and foster inclinations and habits toward ethical and moral conduct with a spiritual awareness.

Course learning outcomes

  • Critically analyse diverse views, theories and perspectives on child development via Islamic Research Methodology including as this informs teaching and learning within an Islamic pedagogy and approaches to wellbeing and pastoral care in Islamic schooling contexts
  • Develop understanding and application of Islamic Research Methodology as this informs principles, strategies and approaches
  • Critique a range of principles, strategies and practical techniques related to managing learning environments and character education initiatives within conventional and Islamic schooling contexts, nationally and internationally
  • Develop knowledge, skills and attitudes informed by Islamic Research Methodology to support teaching to promote engaging learning environments and productive student behaviours
  • Explore notions of spirituality in Islamic education as well as classroom, whole school and whole community approaches to building strong school culture and positive learning environments for Muslim students and Islamic school communities
