Course overview
This course will develop students' understanding of theories of learning and teaching mathematics and their own thinking and reasoning skills. To explore current research and issues in mathematics education which impact on learners' understanding, problem solving and reasoning abilities. Students as preservice teachers will further develop their understanding of the big ideas in number, space, measurement, chance and data, patterns and relationships, thinking, reasoning and communicating mathematically. Students will examine current research in mathematics education and how it informs their practice. Students will develop their professional numeracy, including interpretation and use of learner data for planning learning experiences that cater for individual needs. Students will apply the Australian Curriculum Mathematics proficiency strands in planning and teaching.
Course learning outcomes
- Think and communicate mathematically through processes of problem solving, reasoning, verifying, reflecting and applying.
- Critically evaluate and apply recognised diagnostic tools for measuring mathematical understanding and understandings in other learning areas.
- Design a sequence of learning experiences in mathematics which takes information from a range of sources into account.
- Critique the role of technologies in developing and evaluating mathematical understanding.
- Evaluate strategies and resources for teaching and assessing students' mathematical understanding.
